If you’ve used Gimp for any amount of time you know that adding fonts is simple: Install fonts to C:\Windows\Fonts, launch Gimp and your new fonts are available to you. Well, this seems to be broken in newer versions of Gimp.

The trouble seems to be with the way fontconfig caches fonts. When it runs for the first time, Gimp builds a list of all fonts installed on the system and for some reason after that first time doesn’t update this list. What we need to do is delete the cache and relaunch Gimp in order to re-cache your fonts.

To do that go to Start > Run and type %USERPROFILE%. This will open your home directory in Windows Explorer. Now, browse to Local Settings\Temp\fontconfig\cache and delete all files in that folder. Launch Gimp and wait. Depending on how many fonts you have installed it could take a few minutes to fully start up while it rebuilds the font cache. Once Gimp is running, browse through your fonts. All of your installed fonts should now be available to you!
