If you’ve used Gimp for any amount of time you know that adding fonts is simple: Install fonts to C:\Windows\Fonts, launch Gimp and your new fonts are available to you. Well, this seems to be broken in newer versions of Gimp.

The trouble seems to be with the way fontconfig caches fonts. When it runs for the first time, Gimp builds a list of all fonts installed on the system and for some reason after that first time doesn’t update this list. What we need to do is delete the cache and relaunch Gimp in order to re-cache your fonts.

To do that go to Start > Run and type %USERPROFILE%. This will open your home directory in Windows Explorer. Now, browse to Local Settings\Temp\fontconfig\cache and delete all files in that folder. Launch Gimp and wait. Depending on how many fonts you have installed it could take a few minutes to fully start up while it rebuilds the font cache. Once Gimp is running, browse through your fonts. All of your installed fonts should now be available to you!

There may be times when we want to make changes to our blogs, to test a new plugin or theme, and we don’t want to do this on our live site. What we can do is install a local copy of WordPress on our PC for development. This is a step by step on how to do that. We will be installing WAMP5 - a software package that will allow us to run Apache, PHP5 and MySQL on our PC. This is extremely simple to do and will only take 10 minutes.

1. Download and install WAMP5 into C:\wamp. It is ok to use the default settings for the rest of the installation.

2. Left click the WAMP5 System Tray icon and select Put Online.

3. Open your browser and go to http://localhost. You should see the WAMP5 homepage.

4. Now that your web server is up and running, let’s create the WordPress database. On the WAMP5 home page, click the PHPmyadmin link.

5. Enter wordpress in the “Create New Database” Field, and select utf8_unicode_ci in the drop down box in the next field, as shown below. Click on Create.

6. Download WordPress and unzip it into C:\wamp\www. Note: If you are doing development for your live blog, it’s recommended that you install the same version of WordPress locally that you run online. Older versions of WordPress can be found in the WordPress Release Archives. You may have to check with your hosting company to find out which version is installed.

7. You now have a WordPress folder under C:\wamp\www. Browse to that folder and open wp-config-sample.php in a text editor. Replace the default values with these:

// ** MySQL settings ** //
define(’DB_NAME’, ‘wordpress’); // The name of the database
define(’DB_USER’, ‘root’); // Your MySQL username
define(’DB_PASSWORD’, ”); // …and password BLANK!
define(’DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’); // 99% chance you won’t need to change this value

8. Save the file as wp-config.php.

9. Open your browser and navigate to http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php and follow the instructions.

Your done! You now have a local copy of WordPress running on your computer. You can now hack away without the worry of breaking anything on your live site.

It’s extremely easy to set-up, to use, and there are a ton of useful plugins out there that extend it’s functionality even more. When your just starting out, it can be confusing to know which plugins to start with.

Here are my list of essential plugins that should be used by all bloggers:

Feedburner Feed Replacement - Forwards all your feed traffic to Feedburner.com so you can make use of their features for feed presentation and subscriber analysis.

Google Sitemaps Generator - Generates a XML-Sitemap compliant sitemap of your WordPress blog. This format is supported by Ask.com, Google, YAHOO and MSN Search

TinyMCE Advanced - Adds 16 plugins to WordPress’ wysiwyg editor. Supports fullscreen mode, adding and editing basic tables and search and replace in the editor!

AdSense-Deluxe - Allows for simple insertion of Google AdSense or Yahoo Publisher Network ads into your WordPress posts.

WordPress Database Backup - Creates a backup of your WordPress Database. The backup can be emailed to you or downloaded directly.

ImageManager - Allows for browsing and uploading of image files onto your WordPress site. Also allow simple image editing such as crop, rotate, flip, and scale.

Google Analytics and Feedburner Reports - View reports from Google Analytics and Feedburner in your WordPress administration area.

Subscribe to Comments - Give your readers the option to receive email notification of further comments.

SimpleTags - Allows you to easily generate Technorati tags at the bottom of your blog entries.

This is a just a small sample of the plugins out there, but are considered the best by a large number of WordPress users. If you know of a plugin that should be listed, leave a comment.
